Revit Warning Tracking Protections

Warning Tracking Protections provides Company and Project Administrators the ability to apply Guardian’s traditional protection modes, Monitor, Guide, and Prevent, to every native Revit warning surfaced by the API.

Administrators can:

  • Assign different protection modes to specific warnings.
  • Customize Command Messages to teach best practices and clarify risks.
  • Require comments to capture user intent.
  • Send email notifications when risky warnings are triggered.
  • Undo the command that caused the warning (Prevent mode).

Once enabled at the Project Configuration level, Warning Tracking Protections adopt instantly across registered models. Each warning becomes a teachable moment, educating users on risks such as model instability, inaccurate geometry, hosting conflicts, or coordination issues. These warnings can also be tracked in real-time through Project Central.

This protection can be configured globally or overridden per project, utilizing File Overrides.

Why We Created Warning Tracking Protections

Reducing Revit warnings is an essential part of maintaining healthy models, but users commonly, or almost always, ignore them. Warning Tracking Protections delivers proactive quality control, helping teams avoid unnecessary rework while improving model performance and reduces downstream risk, all the while educating users.

Across hundreds of firms, we’ve seen the same issues:

  • Users dismiss warnings as “background noise.”
  • Many Revit warnings are often ignored until they cause a major drop in model performance, even though performance has been gradually declining all along.
  • BIM managers spend hours resolving Revit warnings.
  • Certain warnings indicate user misunderstanding that can be corrected immediately.
  • Some high-risk warnings are ignored that lead to unnecessary work addressing misaligned data.

And with  Prevent mode, Guardian goes a step further: it can automatically reverse the action that generated the warning, ensuring risky commands never compromise the project.

Enable Warning Tracking

This feature can be enabled and customized through Project Configurations. As with all Project Configuration settings, Guardian’s Warning Tracking Protections can be customized on a project-by-project basis within File Settings. The specific warnings to be tracked can be customized by selecting the settings cog.

Project Configurations dialog with Warning Tracking Protections highlighted

The Warning Tracking Protections dialog shows all the selected Revit warnings to be tracked. For each warning, a mode, notification, priority, and message can be set.

  • Mode: Admins can define the response level (Monitor, Guide, or Prevent) and the frequency of reminders for each warning.
    • Monitor: While not interfering with the end-user’s workflow, the executed warning is registered with Guardian’s Project Central™ and Guardian Backstage™. The Monitor mode helps BIM managers and Digital Design Leaders gain insights into how of their users are generating warnings, providing guidance if it may require a higher level of protection.
    • Guide: As the Revit end-user executes a Revit command that generates a Revit warning, a customized Command Message is displayed, communicating the potential risk associated with the Revit warning and request the user address the warning immediately afterwards. The user can proceed with the command once the message is read and, if required to do so, enter a comment explaining the need to execute the command.
    • Prevent: Again, a customized Command Message is displayed, but the user is prevented from executing the command. In Prevent, Guardian is simply undoing the previous command. The end-user may enter an administrator-provided password to proceed with executing the command that generated the Revit warning.
  • Send Email: Checking this will automatically send an email to the Project Administrator when that Revit warning is generated.
  • Priority: Low (green), medium (yellow),or high (red) can be set, and this will label the warnings accordingly when displayed in Project Central and Guardian Backstage.
  • Message: Customize a Command Message to communicate context directly to end-users, turning warnings into teachable, proactive moments.

Guardian comes preloaded with the most common Revit warnings listed and priorities set. Nearly 2,000 of the available Revit warnings can be added to the list of tracked warnings. To add a new warning, simply click the Add New button in the lower left corner.

Warnings in Project Central

Within Project Central, the Revit warnings generated by each user can be found under Users at a Glance. Clicking on the number of warnings filters the Activity Feed accordingly. The Revit warnings can all be seen under the Timeline tab. Lastly, the Activity Feed can be filtered by warnings. Clicking on any of the warnings displays an informational dialog providing detailed information about that warning, giving admins the information they need to resolve Revit warnings quickly and effectively.
