A Mapping Configuration is Guardian’s memory for your firm’s standards. When a Company or Project Administrator uses Model Properties to convert, or “map,” incoming Revit properties to those in the active project model, the Mapping Configuration stores and remembers those rules, or “Mapping Rules” – making them available for automatic mapping for every project that uses that configuration.
Think of Mapping Configurations as reusable rule sets: you build them once, assign them to projects, and Guardian applies the rules automatically every time content is loaded.
Mapping Configurations work in conjunction with Model Properties and Transactions. Think of Model Properties as the engine for executing mappings. Transactions are the signal for Guardian to automatically launch Model Properties for incoming content. Mapping Configurations are the keys to the engine and its memory system.
Note:Model Properties and any of its tangential features will not operate without a Mapping Configuration assigned to the model.
Getting Started with Mapping Configurations
Guardian does not include any pre-loaded Mapping Configuration files. They must be created by a Company Administrator. It is recommended to start with three configurations:
Configuration
Purpose
Blank
For firms who are not ready to take full advantage of Model Properties but would like to take advantage of its tangential features such as Merging of Duplicate Families and Purging Unused Properties from Incoming Content, along with monitoring of all incoming content. It is recommended to create a “Blank” Mapping Configuration to get started.
Testing
Used to test new mapping rules without affecting existing registered models. The rules created within the testing configuration can be merged into the Firmwide Standards Mapping Configuration when ready.
Firmwide Standards
The primary configuration where approved rules are stored for use across all registered models.
Discipline Standards
A unique configuration where approved rules are stored for disciplines that do not follow the same standard.
Client/Project Standards
A unique configuration where approved rules are stored for a specific client or project that has its own standards.
Create and Edit Mapping Configurations
Create a New Mapping Configuration
Go to Settings > Mapping Configurations
In the Mapping Configurations window, click the New button and enter a name for the configuration.
The other buttons in the window allow you to Rename, Delete, Duplicate, or Merge existing configurations.
Create and Edit Mappings in a Mapping Configuration
Mapping rules can be created and modified within the Mapping Configurations dialog.
Pro Tip: While Mappings can be created within the Mapping Configuration dialog, it is highly recommended to perform all mappings within the Model Properties or Incoming Properties dialogs as the UI is specifically designed to perform these mappings effectively and within context.
To create a new mapping, click the New icon. To edit an existing mapping, select the mapping from the list, then click the Pencil icon.
Both options pull up the Add / Edit Mapping dialog where the action and family name can be modified.
Filtering Mapping Rules
In the Mapping Configurations dialog, mapping rules can be filtered to show only removals or only mappings.
Click the Mapping Configuration to view in the left column
Click the Settings cog in the top right
Click Show only removal rules to view existing mappings that are set to be removed from the model on import
Click Show only mapping rules to existing properties that are set to be mapped to a new property on import
Assign Project Administrators to Mapping Configurations
Project Administrators must be assigned to a Mapping Configuration for them to execute full mappings (or memorized mappings) on the model they are assigned. Otherwise, any mapping performed by a Project Administrator will only be a One-Time Mapping. Company Administrators will always be able to perform full mappings.
To assign a Project Administrator:
Select the Cog icon
Within the Manage Mapping ConfigurationsAdministrators dialog, click the New button
Select one of the available Project Administrators, then click Add
Apply Mapping Configurations to New Registered Models
A Mapping Configuration can be applied automatically whenever a new model is registered with Guardian. This is the recommended approach to ensure Guardian functions correctly from the moment a model is registered.
To set the Mapping Configuration assigned for all newly registered models:
Pro Tip: Company Admins do not need to log out of their admin account to test mapping rules after assigning a configuration.
Click Edit rules for the registration to be modified
Under the Mapping Configuration column, click the Mapping Configuration assigned, then click OK
Continue with the remaining 3 and then click OK to close the dialog
Note: A default Mapping Configuration can also be assigned from the Mapping Configurations dialog (Settings > Mapping Configurations). Clicking the Star button will assign that Mapping Configuration to all new projects in which a Mapping Configuration has not been assigned as part of the Model Registration rules.
Change the Mapping Configuration on an Existing Registered Model
The Mapping Configuration assigned to an already-registered model can be changed at any time.
In Registered Projects, locate the model and update the Mapping Configuration field. This can be done for the currently open model or any other registered file.
A Mapping Configuration can also be changed within Guardian’s Project Central.
