Overview

Ending a Guardian Link stops the Primary Project Team’s configurations from governing the model. Every company in the Link goes back to its own Guardian configurations for that model, all at once.

Only the Primary can end a Link, and an ended Link can’t be turned back on.

Before Ending a Link

  • Who can end a Link: A Company Administrator from the Primary Project Team, or a Project Administrator assigned to the model.
  • It applies to everyone: All Linked Collaborators lose the Primary’s standards on the model at the same time, including companies that haven’t accepted or reviewed the Link yet.
  • It’s permanent: The Primary can start a new Link later, but must go through enabling, acceptance and sharing setup again.

Pro Tip: The Primary should notify Linked Collaborators before ending a Link. Once it ends, each company’s own configurations apply to the model again, and those may differ from the Primary’s. Advance notice keeps Collaborator teams from being surprised by different protections, mappings, or worksets.

End a Guardian Link

  1. Open Link Details from the Link icon in the Project panel of the Guardian ribbon or select Link Details from the model’s kebab menu in Registered Projects.
  2. Select End Link.
  3. Read the confirmation, then confirm.

What Happens Afterward

  • Each company’s model goes back to its own Project Configuration, Mapping Configuration, and Workset Configuration, and its own Guardian Sync Properties.
  • Protections are evaluated against each company’s own configurations again.
  • Companies no longer share a sync queue or new Project Central activity for the model. Activity and messages recorded while the Link was active stay visible to the companies that could already see them. Activity from another company is shown without that company’s name or logo.
  • Any mapping rules a Linked Collaborator added to the Primary’s Mapping Configuration while the Link was active stay in the Primary’s Mapping Configuration.
  • The Link Status clears from Registered Projects right away, and Enable Link becomes available again.

Note: Users who have the model open when the Link ends keep working under the Primary’s configurations until the model is closed and reopened. The Primary should ask its own teams and all Linked Collaborators to close and reopen the model.

Pro Tip: After a Link ends, the Primary should review its Mapping Configuration to confirm it wants to keep any rules Linked Collaborators added. Learn more about filtering and editing rules in Mapping Configurations.

Start a New Link

An ended Link can’t be reactivated, but any company that was in it, including a former Linked Collaborator, can enable a new Link on the model and become its Primary. This is also how the Primary role moves to a different company: the current Primary ends the Link, then the other company enables a new one. Learn more in Enabling a Guardian Link.

Important Notes

  • Unregistering a model: To unregister a model that is in an active Link, the Primary must end the Link first. Learn more in Registered Projects.
  • Configurations are kept: Ending a Link doesn’t delete any company’s configurations or sync properties. The Primary’s and each Linked Collaborator’s own setup stays in place throughout the Link.
